Your Post-Surrogacy Journey: A Friendly Guide to Time Off Work

Taking time off work after delivering your surrogate baby is an important part of the experience, and it’s great to plan ahead, take care of yourself and get back into normal life! Here are some friendly tips to consider:

Recovery Time

  • Physical Recovery: Your body will need time to heal, especially depending on whether you had a vaginal birth or a C-section. Generally, a couple of weeks is a good starting point to help you feel your best again.
  • Emotional Well-Being: Surrogacy can be an emotional journey, and it’s perfectly normal to need some time to process everything. Give yourself space to feel and reflect on the experience.

Employer Policies

  • Paid vs. Unpaid Leave: Check in with your employer about their policies on maternity leave or other leave options. Some companies might have specific guidelines for surrogates, which is worth knowing!
  • FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act): If you work for a company that qualifies, you could take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to maintain your job.

Planning Ahead

  • Communicate Early: Let your employer know your plans as early as possible. This way, you can discuss your leave options and make smooth arrangements.
  • Transition Plan: Think about how to manage your workload before you go on leave. A little planning can help reduce stress for you and your team.

Support System

  • Help at Home: After giving birth, having some help at home can make a big difference. Whether it’s friends, family, or even meal delivery, every bit counts! Take it easy, mama!
  • Mental Health: Remember, it’s totally okay to seek support from loved ones or professionals if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Hormones will be crashing and you will be elated to help someone have a baby of their own but you will have feelings about it – talk about those!!

Returning to Work

  • Gradual Return: If it’s possible, consider easing back into work gradually. It can make the transition feel less daunting!
  • Check-In with HR: After your leave, touch base with your HR department to make sure everything is set for your return.

Taking the time you need for recovery is essential, so don’t rush it! You’ve been through an incredible journey, and it’s important to care for yourself during this transition. How are you feeling about everything? You are an incredible human, HEAL WELL! xx
